It’s not fair that so many of the women and girls portrayed as role models in the media are nothing like most teenage girls actually are or can relate to. I guess it may seem silly to some people that I dwell so much on this stuff. But I have always wanted to be looked at as someone who doesn’t exploit my sexuality or gender in any way to get places in life.
Be loud. Be aggressive. Be true to yourself. Never worry about what you look like, and don’t take no shit!
I never did a remix for the money because I wanted to be cool with the fact that my name stands next to the other. Of course, saying no is a luxury, but I think it is the most important—staying true to yourself.

Every woman goes through a self-image issue, and we can’t blame them for that. That’s what the “Glamourbaby Diaries” is about. How do we redefine glamour so we can own it? How do we stay conscious of these things? We can feed into media, and we also need to be empowered about what we consume. How can we create a culture of empowerment, where people start to think critically?
It’s very competitive. Inherently, you just have to breathe that. It trickles down to who you are as a person, as a partner, as a worker, as an artist. It’s part of the energy it gives and you give back.
Music lightens the spirit; you lose yourself in it. I don’t want to annoy people with activism in every song…But as a songwriter, I’m sneaking that in.
